I apologize if this is a repeat thread. There may have been something like it on the Discovery Forum. My question: Does Captain Keith C. purposely go out of his way to select some very odd, unconventional men to be deckhands? I believe it was Monty who hired Guy, the rodeo guy; but Keith selected some rather strange character.

Monty also selected the kid last year (his name escapes me) who had never been on a plane and the best part? He had never been on the ocean. They wound up having to Medivac him off the Wizard when he got sick. Then there was Moi, the unending whiner. Not to mention Josh, who was running from the law. Supposedly Lynn has never made full share and was this close to getting his butt fired last year as well. Hey, the Wizard is a boat that makes good money for its crew, but Keith can't even tap into the huge pool of crabbers that became unemployed during consolidation. He has to hire complete unknowns and hope for the best. Riiiiiight.

I wonder if it's a matter of Keith not wanting to put the time into interviewing greenhorns. If not, then he should have someone else choose them -- maybe another captain.

Both Maribegood and Nannyb bring up good points. I am a teacher in the state of Alaska, and I happen to know the politics behind some of the hiring and firing (pink slipping) of teachers in small rural Alaska areas. It may even be happening in the Dutch Harbor School. The administrators will hire a new, inexperienced teachers. Once these teachers are about to get tenure, suddenly down sizing must occur, so the newer teachers are pink slipped. It saves the district some money. I have always taught in the city, so thankfully, I haven't had to experience this. I am wondering if this is what Captain Keith is doing; hiring some off the wall greenies to prevent having shell out more money? Or, maybe he likes the kind of attention that it brings to the Wizard. Who knows? Read more: deadliestcatch.freeforums.net/thread/176/green-horns-wizard#ixzz2a7pPjLDi

His luck with greenhorns isn't too good either. Personally I think they just hire inexperienced greenhorns because they can get them cheaper.

The only real reason any of these boats would legitimately carry a greenhorn is to increase the size of the crew without the financial impact of carrying a full-share deckhand.
I'm sure DC is involved somehow though... perhaps they pay for the GH themselves, just to increase the drama a bit.

You know, theboz, I never considered that, but it does make sense. Why would they burn through so many and all of them are really bad? Lynn is the only one that has managed to stay longer than one trip out.

I think Keith and Monty get a kick out of the strange deckhands that they've hosted. I'm sure they were surprised that Lynn lasted as long as he did.

All deckhands are strange... its just not possible to find a completely normal person that willingly works on a crab boat. someone might tell you otherwise, but they're just not telling the truth.
