So far this season for me personally, Junior has far and away the most compelling storyline. That is serious stuff, for a working class person to have accumulated an injury or injuries serious enough to possibly spell the end of their ability to work in their profession. And people make these in retrospect not smart decisions to keep working through pain and actually doing themselves more harm all the time. It comes down to you don't work>you're not making money>your financial future is in jeopardy. It's not like you are working for a Fortune 500 and you get paid sick leave. So people take chances. Spinal fusion is no joke, and this story sure isn't scripted. It's one of the consequences of doing that physically demanding a job for so many years. I have to give him props for only puking and not fainting from the pain he must have been in. Just my thoughts, I'll shut up now. .

Yeah, Junior is awesome. On of the best new characters on the show. Some people work out, others don't. Junior has most def worked out.

I agree whole heatedly Maribegood. I don't like some of the things Jr. has done, but the back issue was certainly for real. Having had two back surgeries, I can certainly give him major kudos for how long he lasted.
He may have been puking from the pain. But it also could have been the pain meds. If I take any of the codeine products for more than a day or two I start getting very, very "green" around the gills. Add the motion of the boat...and I'm shocked Jr. was even able to function as much as he did.

lcb - I too have had multiple back surgeries, including fusion. The first one basically ended a well-paying career in manufacturing. I have continued to live with pain and other consequences of both operations. A career change/modification is what I have now. Junior's surgery is current sate-of-the-art and he should be doing well long term IF he does not push from the beginning of recovery. I also agree that some of what we saw about him was not that of the other crabbers as to his methods. However, he has proven himself to be a worthy captain IMO.

My Mom had two back surgeries:one in the late 70's and the other in the early 80's. Her back was never the same and she suffered from back pain until she passed. Like jc836 said, back surgery has come a long way. Jr. is not my favorite but I hope he fully recovers and is able to work and support his family. I remember John, Andy, and Phil all complained about their bad backs. I think you can probably not do that back breaking work without developing problems. I remember one early season when Jake H. complained about his back hurting and he was like maybe 20. Back problems are something I would never wish on anyone.

Well, since this is my very first Post here I'll say a great big "HI" to everyone and jump right in with both feet and no lifejacket:
Junior really IS a hero. Kidney stones are no joke either, and he endured those with scarcely a whimper. You get the impression his crew truly "feels" for him, too. But he's not made of steel: remember how he broke down on camera when his Father had to be hospitalized? It choked me up, too, seeing the Father, now healed, trying to comfort a frightened Son facing an uncertain future.
Elliott and Junior were introduced on DC at the same time, weren't they? I think the Producers picked Elliott in hopes of adding some "edginess" to the show, since the antics of Keith and Wild Bill no longer got a "rise" out of viewers; nothing else makes sense, at least not to me. And "Junior" was tabbed to be a perfect foil to Elliott, since he initially seemed to be as "edgy" as a bowl of tapioca. Both turned out to a surprise: one a PR Nightmare, and the other the kind of "Stoic Soldier" songs are written about.
(Whew~ that was HARD!)

and it's not just the deck work that's hard on your back. When I was growing up, my dad had a deep sea fishing boat & all of us (mom, dad & I) would fish in the Gulf & when it would get rough, whoo boy, let me tell ya comin' down off those waves does a number on your back
My hat's off to Scott for even attempting fishing out there with his back in such bad shape, if that'd been me, I would've been mainlining Norcos like crazy

Does anyone know how Jr is doing? His story is by far the best of the season and would really like to know how he is doing.
