I know it sounds cracy. DC is the most suucessful cable series of all time, a ratings powerhouse, etc., etc. But it's also hideously expensive to produce, with the costs of accomodation and transportation for film crews, salaries for the crew(s) of the "Chase boat(s)" plus operating expenses for the same, and so on. We've all been scratching our heads over the continuing presemce of Elliott on the show, the increasing crudeness of the language (beeps notwithstanding) and the questionable "humor". of late. KIDS watch this stuff and I don't think some parents are thrilled by the "turn" the show has taken. Could Discovery be trying to DUMP DC by turning more and more people OFF? "Sorry Folks, but our viewership's dropping and the Sponsors are zipping up there wallets. We just can't go on with DC. But look on the bright side: we';ll be able to give you even more great episodes of "Naked and Unflayed" and " A$$ Monkey Garage"!
Anyone have any thoughts here? (Don't be afraid to tell me I've lost my (remaining) mind!

Interesting question. And a coincidence you should ask; I was thinking as I watched the last episode a night or two ago, that this is going to be my last year for Deadliest Catch. I record them on a DVR and find that I'm fast forwarding through almost the entire program now. It has evolved into a really annoying soap opera. As has been pointed out here many times, you can only watch pots come in over the sides so many times before it starts to get really old. Hence all the contrived drama. I can't really imagine any scenario that would cause me to tune in for another year.
Time to stick a fork in it, Discovery Channel; it's done!

Where do I begin? I love DC, but like most who have shared their opinions, I am disappointed in some of the casting and changes. I think that show, "Naked and Afraid," is just plain stupid and laughable. Don't get me started on, "Alaskan Bush People." As a true and life long Alaskan, I think that show is a bunch of BS! Disco needs a make-over.

I don't think Discovery is deliberately trying to kill DC. As others have pointed out, they are turning ALL their reality shows into stupid soap operas. Several of those are way worse than DC. I guess they have done their research, and found out that this is what gives them the most viewers.

Disco just secured a big, fat, subsidy from the state of Alaska to continue filming next season. There will be a DC 2015.
Now, I have read that the contracts with most of, if not all, of the usual suspects are up and Disco is deciding who to bring back. Early betting says they are done with the TB. So, who do they bring in? I'd be beyond shocked if Elliott goes out and Disco fails to capture every second of the trips.
Then again, ya nevers know, eh?

I was wondering: How large are the DC boats' quota compared to the rest of the fleet? We know that the Kiska Sea had larger quotas than the rest last year. Is it only the small quota boats that have time to mess around with camera crews, while the larger ones concentrate on fishing?

If there IS a "Season 11", what might we see? Hilarious footage of a deckhand unwittingly nibbling a Marijuana Brownie? Paternity Tests for an entire crew? Nothing it seems is too outrageous for Discovery these days...
As for "Naked" : the greenest Boy Scout knows you must first rig yourself some headwear so your Brains don't get baked. Which is probably what happened to the Producers.

DC just won those Emmys(not for best show) which they made a big deal about. I don't see the TB coming back - if they do I would be surprised. DC will continue to do the show until it is no longer profitable. When that time comes they will drop it like a hot potato and probably not give the boats any prior notice. After all, its a business and OP's job is to make money-dumb, fake shows and all. I think ahole Elliott will return just for the controversy he creates and the show is now pretty much a soap opera. I'm sure they can find other boats who have all sorts of problems they can but on the show. After all, drug and alcohol problems seem to be part of the job for most, not all, crabbers. It will be interesting to see if they resign the CM. I would guess that Josh probably needs the money. From what I have read, the money pays for the fuel, which would save him a big expense. That's money he could put to use for something else for the boat.

DC has not won any Emmys this year...yet, They have been nominated and winners will be announced August 15.
The thing with the TB is that they have a considerably large fan base, heavily skewed to the coveted 18-49 yr old male demographic. If they don't come back, it will be at Hillstrand, not Discovery instigation. Discovery is in the business of keeping coveted fan bases, which brings us to Elliot.
He has been floated out all season to test how much "edginess" the fans can tolerate. He generates controversy, but there is no evidence according to the ratings this year that an Elliot heavy episode generates extra viewers. They will keep trying to tweak him to bring in more viewers, but the plan is not yielding much fruit so far. They aren't going to purposely kill the goose that has laid them so many golden eggs, but the old bird is getting tired, how much longer can it really go? Maybe another year or two?

Don't know how many people subscribe to this list but it seems as though we're all still watching. What does that tell you about the demise of DC?

At the bottom of the front page:
Users Online in the Last 24 Hours 1 Staff, 20 Members, 431 Guests.
I'm guessing that each of us guests are counted more than once, but the 1 Staff, 20 Members is fairly typical.
If the activity on this forum said anything about DC's popularity, the show would have been canceled by now.

Just curious. Why do some of you think that the Time Bandit won't be coming back?
I don't think Discovery is trying to dump DC. It's still among the most viewed cable series and I haven't seen anything about sponsors zipping their wallets. Sponsors do change over time. That's pretty normal.
After ten seasons, a show is going to evolve somewhat. I think it natural to give more focus on their personal lives over time. Most viewers are interested IMO - the interactions between family members, Jr's back problems, etc. You may not like all the participants but that's true on just about all reality shows. I do agree that it is time for Elliot to go. I think DC kept him because he was unique (I'm being kind here) but he has continued to turn the viewers off. As I've said before, I think there's a good chance he won't be back on the show next season since the Cornelia Marie is back and there are a lot more viewers who want to see their story more than Elliot's.

Is that "subsidy" Discovery scored from the Alaska State Gov't STRICTLY for "Deadliest Catch", or does it cover the multitude of other Alaska-based 'Reality shows' we've been inundated with? I.e.--
Bering Sea Gold Flying Wild Alaska Alaska: the Last Frontier Gold Rush Yukon Men* Alaska Bush People Kodiak. *Refers to the Yukon River, NOT the Canadian Territory named for it.
Just curious....-

This link details some subsidies that Alaska has paid out to the company which produces DC. Millions. linkI can't find the story which announced 2015 subsidies. Apologies.

My bet is that Junior's back problem will keep him out next season and that will end the Seabrooke's participation on the show. I don't think that viewers will still watch it with a different Captain. That would give Disco a chance to bring in a new boat. It's true that we have far, far fewer posters on this forum that we did on the old one, which is interesting. At the switch we could keep track of who had signed up for this one and almost all of the regular posters did but then didn't keep posting like they had been. I don't think that they switched to any of the other forums either. Perhaps they lost interest in the show or in posting about it. I still miss some of them like CopperPossum and Ridermama.

I miss PAMD too; hope all is well with him. We may be a small group, but we are a class act. I hope that if DC does end, we can all find another show to talk about. I would miss you guys.

Just to put people's minds at ease, the Doc is well. I got a message through to him via a mutual acquaintance. He had some personal things go down and decided to quit his online presence on the two boards he frequented, and concentrate on the care of the under served community he has decided to focus his remaining years of practice on.
I wished him the best on behalf of all of us and reminded him he was always welcome to drop by and just electronically visit us. He is missed, but he is doing good, necessary work.

As to Ridernama, yeah, I miss her too. I'm not sure why she does not post anymore. I suspect it may be out of deference to her husband, Crusher. Last time Crusher posted here he gave a general tongue lashing over what he felt was this board's unfair treatment of the Harris brothers. He was pretty mad and RM stopped posting soon after.

Crusher and Ridermama have their own DC site that they are running. I think that is where their loyalties lie.

I wouldn't be happy posting on any site where you weren't allowed to post freely regardless of how the site owner felt about that particular person. Which is why I post here.

I like this discussion board even MORE than I liked the old one. Over there, liking Keith got you labelled as a masochist with an IQ between that of an elderly Capuchin Monkey and a Pet Rock.

10's of millions if not 100's of millions of viewers believe EVERYTHING they see or hear in the public media is truthful, honest, and without distortions so dc is in little danger of dying. dc might imploded but lack of gullible viewers will not kill them. this board is great.

Regarding "viewers":
Not all of the DC Skippers/deckhands are Adonises, But if Mandy and Jessica (both intelligent, self-assured young ladies. I'm certain) were bow-legged, gap-toothed, and forty pounds overweight, would either of them have been "featured"?
I hope I don't sound like I'm jealous ...Because I AM!

Don't be jealous. You are wonderful the way that you are. Beautiful women have their own challenges, not the least of which is that they get the attention of men who want nothing but eye candy to make them look good. Ordinary, in my opinion, has a huge up-side.
BTW, this site is wonderful because the moderator makes it that way. How many trolls has she run off over the time this list has been open? She knows how it is supposed to be done and I congratulate her!!
