Did anyone else see the ABC news last night? They had a few seconds of the Time Bandit in heavy seas and Johnathan looking worried saying they are concentrating on keeping everyone safe. They mentioned DC. It was a shock, and somehow seeing that made it more real than just another storm. I guess it's on their site.

The Marine Tracking site shows the NW arriving at 3pm today. www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/details/ports/193I'm not sure how 3pm makes sense. The Ramblin' Rose left yesterday at 11pm. The Time Bandit is out of range. I'm worried about it. I'm not an expert on this site, so maybe someone else can make more sense of it.

Hi everyone, don't kill me for this. But, every Captain knew for a week that storm was coming. I would guess that would be enough time to make plans and bring you boat in to a safe place. Sometimes I think it's just done for the tv. Hence, the news with the TB and the mention of DC. I know they want to keep their crews safe, so why take the chance?

While we wring our hands over the boats in the DC fleet, let's not forget the freighters, tankers, container ships and other commercial vessels who've had to deal with this storm and similar ones.... November 10, 1975 is the day that the Edmund Fitzgerald went down. RIP "Big Fitz", Captain McSorely, and crew.

If the DC boats are the only ones out there, I guess they're only doing it for the cameras. Else, it's a simple cost analysis. Does it cost more to stop fishing, run to the nearest harbour and turn the (main) engines off, or to burn fuel riding the storm off at sea?

Does it cost more to stop fishing, run to the nearest harbour and turn the (main) engines off, or to burn fuel riding the storm off at sea? Often they simply shut down fishing and "jog" which means idling the engines keeping the bow pointed into the storm. This is the most cost effective if there is no crab aboard. A crab boat can take some pretty severe weather as long as it's running. If there is crab aboard, bad weather could bounce the crab around and kill some of it, which can jeopardize the entire load. In that case, most will run someplace and hide. Often they will run into False Pass,or hide behind Amak Island. www.google.com/search?q=amak+island&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-US:IE-Address&ie=&oe=&gws_rd=ssl

While the big storm missed King Cove,on Monday a different storm kicked up and did some serious damage to the processing plant there. A local posted a short video of the roof coming off the crab plant, and shortly after part of the roof of the main building came off and destroyed the entire office. Nobody injured! A boat was waiting to unload a load of bairdi. They were able to operate again on Wednesday www.facebook.com/video.php?v=744128225674220&set=vb.100002311482362&type=2&theater
