Thanks Doder for the article. I was poking around the internet last night trying to figure out when the seasons run as they do. I thought Oct 15th is when red crab usually kicks off, especially since Scotty Hillstrand said he thought he'd be home for Halloween, however the Alaska web site only states that red crab is open from Sept 1-15th. Tanner is Oct 15th-May 31st. Opilio starts Oct 15th and runs til May 31st. I'm pretty sure they wait until Jan 1st to go for Opilio bc of their traveling habits. But now I'm confused as to the dates they have stated in the past on DC. Obviously it makes the most sense to go for Reds then Tanner because of the limited time available for reds. If there's only a two week window for reds, how were the CM crew able to still go fishing after all of the breakdown issues. Seems like they would've only had a few days.

That does not sound right for Red crab. The season does not start till Oct, and it definitely does not have a 2 week window. Can you put a link in to where you saw the info?
As for Opilio, yes, it does start that early. Most boats do not harvest that early because the legs usually have not filled with the maximum amount of "meat" that early in the season, and they will get a lower price for the crab as a result. Kingcove can explain it a lot better, but that is the basic gist.
BTW, last year the Kiska Sea started Opilio in December, fished through Christmas, and were done some time in January.

OK, that site is confused. Next to the Sept date is a hyperlink for King crab. When you click the hyperlink and read down, they give an October 15th date for the start of King crab in the Aleutians.
