Wow - OMG - I am so sad to hear this. I really liked Tony Lara - he seemed kind, patient and just a nice guy. Prayers are with his family and friends. The article got his age wrong - he was only 50 years old-way too young.

Horrible news. It seems that crab fishermen don't have a very long life span. In my mind, Deadliest Catch doesn't just refer to the possibility of death on the Bering sea - it extends to the untimely natural deaths of those who fish there.

Maybe I'm wrong but it seems like the most recent deaths have all been people who have been on the CM. Except for Justin who fished on the TB.

It is bad news. Tony seemed genuine nice guy. He was also good friends with derrick ray and didn't speak ill of him. Stood up after people were bashing derrick on his facebook page a few years ago.
To be honest when josh got the CM back. I though Josh was going to have Tony mentor him oppose to Casey and show him the ropes.

Josh might have asked Tony - but, I'll bet, Tony knew better than to try to teach the Harris boys again.

The article said Tony owned a land freight business in Kodiak. Maybe he could not take the time off needed to mentor Josh. In his FB page from 2011, he said he had known Josh and Jake for over 20 years, which would mean they were very young boys. A sad day for all the fisherman who knew him.

RIP, Tony and condolences to his family, such a nice guy. Crabbing is strenuous and the guys don't seem like they take very good care of themselves, so a lot of early deaths.

Mari - Thanks for posting that. I personally thought the cause would be a heart attack. I saw in comments left by a friend, his brother had died in a motorcycle accident just about this time two years ago. His poor family. He seemed like such a great guy.

I just noticed the DC FB page has a nice memorial to Tony Lara on the CM. There is one scene where Jake says how much he loves Tony and yells to the wheel house "Tony you're the man. Your a fucking rock star". There is another scene where Tony lets Jake drive the boat and Jake LISTENS to what Tony has to say, and starts driving while Tony walks on deck. I mention this because that one scene showed that a clean Jake was far more serious about captaining than Josh has shown himself to be this whole year. There was another scene where Tony tells Josh how to discuss a mistake with a crew member - calmly tell them what they did wrong, complement them on what they did good, then tell them not to let it happen again. Far different from Josh's "I'm the captain" shit fit a couple of weeks ago. I'm sure it must be hard for both of them with his passing. They spent their summers on the boat with him for 10 years.

Some strange "bad luck" for this boat. It makes me sad to see, they're all such great people.
