Further information: The problem seems to be caused by an algae bloom. The crabs are picking up the toxin from the algae. The algae should be well away from the coast of CA at this time of year, but the unusually warm ocean water has caused the algae to linger. The fishing fleet could miss the Thanksgiving market for every day they are grounded, and that of course, will be a disaster for their profits.

the red tide is hanging around way longer this year...I haven't heard about it till now. What a shame, there are so many fishermen that depend on Dungeness. The salmon fishing has been dismal due to the drought, and now the crab are compromised as well.....

The commercial Dungeness season in California and Oregon has still not opened as of today. Razor clam season in Washington was closed as of Dec 8.
