I happened to catch a marathon showing of Deadliest Catch yesterday. I suddenly realized that I have lost interest in the show because of Jake H. and his constant reflections on his father - how wonderful he was, and how Phil prepared the boys for a life at sea (it's in our blood). I just can't take it anymore. Jake has been unsuccessful more times than he has succeeded. And each time he fails, he attributes his failure to anything other than him. I'm beginning to wish that DC would just move on without him.

Yes, the whole Legacy thing is starting to wear a bit thin. Especially since Phil didn't seem to CARE whether or not he owned the Boat he was "captaining", he was determined to establish it as one of the fleet's top "moneymakers". Josh H seems to have developed a bad case of "Neese Syndrome".....the unshakeable conviction that, regardless of what he says or how he acts, EVERYBODY positively "loves" him!

I was about to come on here and defend Josh...he does have some redeeming qualities that I think showed in his interaction with his dad in the hospital, and he seems fairly 'normal' after enduring a screwed up childhood...
But...
I just saw a teaser clip on DISCO about next week's episode. Apparently the CM is adding Bairdi rings to their pots, while at sea...and there aren't enough. The crew gets on the phone and calls the captain - of course its Casey (Josh is in the other chair). Casey describes that he bought enough for 300 pots, 4 per pot, they should be on board, etc.
Josh says "That should be 1,200 right?"...as in this is the first time Josh knows or cares about the Bairdi rings. Seems like Casey does all the planning on that boat....and sadly, Josh lets him.
BTW, Casey blamed the crew for not having the rings (not a great response)..and the viewer is left to wonder if they'll have to turn back.
btw - anyone else see Casey's Bairdi commercial for Joe's crab shack:

He does have redeeming qualities as you described catchaddict, but they don't make up for the fact that he is lazy and the only reason he is out fishing if you can call it that is to get his face on TV.

Josh has to milk Phil, otherwise, he would have to go get a job. A real working job. As long as DC thinks people are really interested in Josh, he will continue to act like the spoiled little donkey's behind.
Casey must have the patience of Job to put up with Josh. Who knows, maybe the new owners will kick Josh to the curb. From what Casey & Josh said, they could be fired. Keep Casey and get rid of Josh. He is nothing more than dead weight!

Casey must have the patience of Job to put up with Josh.
I think Casey is enjoying his taste of celebrity too...if nothing else, for the financial aspects. Above I posted a Joe's Crab Shack commercial featuring Casey, and in the past he did a testimonial for boat paint (with Josh).
And, I think (for now) Casey's celebrity is tied to Josh...but that could change gradually.
DISCO put a teaser video on their FB page today. I'm not sure what is going on, but Josh is on the radio with Wild Bill, and trying to navigate. It makes Josh look fairly clueless, and 'small' in the captain's chair.

I thought I would share this transcript from Bill and Keith when talking about kids following their dads footsteps and work ethic. I believe it could be related to Josh. (source:http://www.rainbowrumpus.org/captains-keith-colburn-wild-bill-wichrowski-deadliest-catch/) 'Commercial fishermen Captains Keith Colburn and Wild Bill Wichrowski are veteran captains who fish the Bering Sea for king crab every year. They also star on the reality show Deadliest Catch. What is it like having one of your own kids on your crew? Bill: My son said, I love working for you, but you were tougher on me than any other guy on the team. When you’re working with your own kid, your expectations are for success. You want someone to bring it back up to the level of the old school guys. I’m a first generation fisherman, but I wanted my son to pick a career, whatever he enjoys and loves, whether that’s following in my footsteps or not. I have no expectations of him being a fisherman. Maybe I’m different because I’m first generation. Keith: I have the utmost respect for Bill to have his son on board. You’re going to push your kid harder than anyone else. I have never done it, and I don’t know if I could do it. Are today’s fishermen different than what you were like at that age? Bill: With my son, he grew up in a very liberal background where everyone deserves a pat on the back, so Zack doesn’t take criticism well. He always wants some positive reinforcement. In this industry, positive reinforcement comes with production. If he doesn’t complete a task, you don’t get a pat on the back for that. If it was a regular crew member, he’d get nothing but a butt chewing. I’m not even sure it’s resolved now. Keith: We’ve seen this for the past 15 years. They want a little badge just for waking up in the morning. But this is not a kickball tournament where you get a trophy just for showing up. This job is really really dangerous and everyone has to step up. If you’re not doing your job, you’re distracting the other guys and putting them at greater risk. If we’re not the nicest bosses, that’s how we work. Do you think working on a fishing boat is a good way for kids to learn a work ethic? Bill: I have told that to every parent who has a teenage kid — send your kid to Alaska to work on a boat for a summer. It will teach them work ethic, responsibility, and show they they have to study to not have that job, or give up the idea everyone needs to go to college and you get paid for what you do. Keith: Everybody has that euphoric follow your dreams, you can be anything idea. That’s real and honest, but know your limitations, too. Maybe there are some things in your life you can’t do well, but there are other things you can excel at. It doesn’t matter what it is. Do what you can and do your best. There’s something out there for you. Find something that suits who you are. Go get it. But don’t ever bite off more than you can chew because you saw it on television. What advice would you give kids on how to overcome obstacles? Bill: We should be talking to the parents. When the parent lets a kid quit a job, that’s what’s molding America today. I’ve had guys want to get off the boat so bad, but I would not let them quit. One guy I remember in particular coming up with a reason to quit every day, and I wouldn’t let him. Then months later, I talked to his stepsister and she said all he brags about is how he finished that season. He’d never finished anything in his life, but I forced him to do it and I made a difference in that guy’s life. Keith: Six years ago I climbed Mt. Rainer with nine people, and five made it to the top. And one of the guys ended up working for me. Here’s a guy who has climbed to the tops of the highest mountains, and one point he said, I’m not sure I can keep going. My hands are numb. And I said, Paul, it’s just like climbing a mountain. Take a couple more steps and a couple more and a couple more. That’s what I tell the kids. When you think you can’t go any further, take another step. What’s the best part of being on a reality TV show for 11 seasons? Bill: When I signed up for this, Discovery said you won’t get rich, but millions of people will be interested in what you’re saying. I do a lot of fundraisers. I’ve done fundraisers for breast cancer charities, Wounded Warriors, lots of different things. This show gives us an opportunity to do something good and we all need to take advantage of it. There’s a lot of good things we can make happen. Keith: We love the fans. They travel hours to come see us or meet us at the airport. Sometimes we’re running late and struggling to stop and it’s hard to say no, but Bill and I are on the same page. We’ve been given a gift and we do everything we can to live up to it. I’ve had some pretty intense moments with fans. I was in Texas doing a store appearance. A four-year-old kid and his mom came up to me, and she says he has a question. He clams up. But then they came back 30 minutes later and he asks, how do you get out of the box? He was talking about the television.' here is the clip itself Bill ripping into Josh. www.tvinsider.com/article/84946/deadliest-catch-exclusive-clip-wild-bill-gets-poed-at-another-ships-captain/

drnash - love the interview with Bill and Keith
As for Josh, in one of the teaser clips for this week (I think its one of the little extras they post on fb), right before the crew discovers the lack of pot rings for bairdi, Josh is talking about using up the tomatoes before they go bad and that they should make tacos for dinner tonight - literally, he's like the housewife in the passenger side of the car. Now that I say that, I apologize for the insult - housewives do a LOT more than he does!

I don't think I would take advise from Bill on how to treat the crew. No one has as high turnover as him. The TB and the NW seems a lot better, and we've seen clear examples of friendship between the captain and the crew on those boats. (Andy in particular has also shown that he is more than willing to throw friendship out the window.) Although I don't like Andy, his 'speak softly and carry a big stick'-approach seems to work better than what Bill is doing. Keith is good at keeping experienced deckhands, but seems as if either his recruitment or his training process is a bit behind the best boats.

I wonder... DC are grooming Zack to be the next 'young' captain. They have brought in a new guy, who are young, and who can also be (and is) used for the 'Dead father's legacy'-thread.
At the same time they are doing their best to put Josh and former superstar Jake A. in a bad light.
Could it be that they are preparing to boot someone off the show next season? Or maybe just to renegotiate some contracts.

Post by reality isn't real on Apr 13, 2016 22:29:33 GMT -5
don't believe everything you see... watching the show, then forming opinions on what people are actually like, is a mistake... as it's played out in finished episodes, it's all about 90% bullsh*t
keep in mind that there's tremendous amounts of editing that go on before you see anything, and the people running this, or any show have no problems with the mischaracterizations or false stories that come through the other side. They edit to create drama and a more compelling story, this is not really reality, but more of a fictionalized, "based on true events" story with a backdrop of real footage (half the shots in the show have no actual connection the the "scene" that's being played out) ...there's no shortage of "creative license" being taken on the part of the authors of the show
I know several people from 2 different "reality" shows from Discovery Channel and a couple more from a third, know many of them very well, and have worked on 3 different boat featured on those shows (not Deadliest Catch or any of the other Alaska shows)
when you know the people, and the boats and how the fishery actually is, when you watch the show it's laughable... can't go 2 minutes without seeing multiple "creatively edited" scenarios that have no basis in reality... or without hearing voice over narration that is anywhere from just inaccurate, to completely false and so far from the truth that you can only think the producers/show runners intentionally fabricated the info.... ie:10 can mistakenly become 12 or 15.... or A can become B or C........... but when 10 somehow becomes 183, or A becomes Z, it's not just sloppy notes or editing, that's intentional fiction
anyhow, I dont know Josh from a hole in the wall, and I agree that from watching the show, he sure seems like he's turned into a d*ck, and the rest of the players all seem to be various shades from a to z... but nobody outside them and their circle know anything close to the truth...
to a large part what we're seeing is the "character" that each person is playing... whether the person is actively participating by hamming it up or acting one way or another for the camera, or they are just being themselves and the shows writers, producers, show runners are crafting their character by way of editing to drive their chosen story lines and the shows arc is something we as the viewers just don't know, but know that it is just that, a story, not reality
after seeing the other 2 shows where I know the people and the reality of how things are, I wouldn't even begin to presume anything I see on Deadliest Catch, or any other Discovery show is even remotely true... the broad, overall story may be somewhere in the vicinity of reality, but don't judge people by the heavily produced finished product that you see on tv, it's a show, it's the channels biggest money maker, and the people running it will likely go to most any extreme to keep the gravy train rolling... the show's been on a long time, there isn't really anything new to see and there hasn't been for several years, but too many people have a vested interest in keeping it going, so expect them to keep milking everything they can from it by whatever means they can
it's not the same extent of fiction as your typical scripted drama, and it's not strictly speaking, characters played by actors ... but it's not necessarily that far off either
.... like grandma said, "believe none of what you hear, and only half of what you see"

While I understand reality shows are edited, I don't think the producers could produce out of thin air the overall theme of the Josh/Bill interaction. Exaggerated? Maybe. "90% bs"? Why even watch the show if you believe that?

You can only watch so many pots come over the rail, and so many stories of bad weather, so DC has to create drama to keep the show interesting. I watch the show mainly for entertainment, and for comparison to reality.

Disco now appears to be over Josh too. They are finally not on the "Heir to Phil" story line now that they have the new kid. Josh's lazy, entitled butt is finally shown for everyone to see. I think Disco knew Josh's true colors but decided to play up the Phil heir for all its worth until someone else came aboard. Now they have Sean. I was very, very, tired of the "Phil heir" crap and I can tell from the DC FB that most people feel the same way. I said in January that I had seen from someone who appeared to be "in the know" posted on the DC FB that Jake was clean, in construction and had decided not to fish for the near future. He may be the smartest one of the two brothers.

well here is an interview deadliest catch posted from tv insider
'Things just aren't getting any easier for Josh Harris on this season of Deadliest Catch. While last week we saw the “captain in training” get a brutal tongue lashing from Captain Wild Bill over his crew’s faulty gear management and Harris’ failure to follow meeting plans. Tonight’s new episode “Swedish Twins,” brings even more challenges as Harris has to take over the Cornelia Marie, but more on that in a bit.
RELATED: Deadliest Catch Exclusive Clip: Wild Bill Gets POed at Another Ship's Captain
We followed up with Harris to get his read on what really went down with that ring transfer debacle. Did we miss something on how he handled the ring exchange? Maybe something got left on the editing floor? Why wasn’t he heading to their agreed upon location? Harris wasn't all that descriptive when he responded via email, saying: “Our coms were having issues and we had no way to communicate until we got close to the boat.”
RELATED: Discovery Back in the Brutal Employment Business, Orders New Series Deadliest Job Interview
Well, Wild Bill definitely did a solid for Harris by bringing out his forgotten supplies and, rightfully, got crazy mad when he saw on his radar that Harris wasn’t heading toward their meeting locale. "The world has been handed to that little bastard," Wild Bill raged. "That pompous mother effer continued to fish while were supposed to run these rings to him?" When we asked Harris how he could make things right with Wild Bill and fix the current perception of him, Harris said, “I don't have time to deal BS. When I want his opinion, I’ll give it to him.”'

The kid needs to be taught a lesson, and hopefully no one else on his boat will have to suffer for it.

I am beginning to suspect that in the absence of Elliott, DC realized Audiences needed another "target" on which to focus their disapproval and contempt. The usual suspects are clearly out of the running, with Keith "mellowing", Wild Bill gaining respect and the Brothers Hillstrand having forsworn their "frat boy" antics, DC was left with only one Candidate for the role --Josh Harris. Or am I just too prone to seeing Conspiracies?.

I'm not sure DC will try to make Josh a full scale villain. His air time on Swedish Twins didn't make him look too bad, at least not villainish...and of course included a shot of a plaque dedicating the wheelhouse to Phil. I just think too much effort has been put into building Josh up, to make him a 'bad guy' like Elliott.
I've also noticed in the closing credits that Josh is in a fairly exclusive group of 'Consultants'...which also includes Sig, the Hillstrands, Keith, and Bill. I don't know what it means to be a 'consultant', but it makes me believe that the show still places a high value on Josh...'good Josh'...and wouldn't start targeting him as the bad guy.

Every year DC has a "villain". For the past few years it was Elliott. I don't know if disco will make Josh a villain, but they are not shy about showin his every mistake front and center which they use to rarely do. It appears he and Jake A. will have their every fault front and center for the viewers this year. However, both make it quite easy. Jake A. with his whiny and immature attitude and Josh with his lazy, entitled attitude. They now have Sean who they can build up to be his father's heir for their new story line.
I also think that Casey enjoys his celebrity status and all that it has to offer. However, he fished before DC and will likely fish after DC - not so sure about Josh. It does sound like both Casey and Josh could loose their jobs as they are now minority owners of the CM and apparently have to answer to the new owners. The new owners are the ones who paid for all the repairs and extra quota.
