From an Article printed in "Mail Online", a popular U.K. Tabloid newspaper: www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2316666/EXCLUSIVE-Deadliest-Catch-stars-dying-wish-New-book-sons-reality-TV-legend-Captain-Phil-Harris-reveals-life-addiction-infidelity-violence-final-harrowing-hours-exploited-ratings.htmlIn 1991 after nine years of marriage and 14 years together Mary and Harris divorced. He fought for custody of their sons and, remarkably, won. Two years later he remarried. Jake and Josh make no secret of the contempt in which they held their stepmother, Teresa. In a shocking section of the book Josh describes her as ‘an evil creature,’ and admits that he and his brother referred to her as ‘Satan.’ They claim that she beat them and drove their father to depression. The couple divorced in 2003 after ten years of marriage and when Teresa died of a heart attack in 2011 Josh state: ‘I didn’t feel bad. She was one of the meanest people I ever met.’ Shortly before his death Harris asked his first wife, Mary, to marry him again. She turned him down, telling him he was a much better friend
Reading that, I could believe Teresa blocked the boys' access to Mary so they wouldn't find out what she really was like. But that's pure speculation on my part. If there'd been a "DC" in the 1990's, what would we have thought of Phil? Would he have been another "Elliott"? Phil paid for his sins; may he Rest in Eternal Peace.

Such a sad situation all the way around. I find their whole family situation very confusing. In a couple of online sources it mentions that Josh and Jake have 5 sisters. It doesn't go into the source/background. Are these sisters from Phil, Mary, or the evil stepmother?

It seems like there must have been some bad things going on with Mary. I can't believe a court would give custody to Phil who was never around even with a step mother. Also it would seem like the boys would have had a chance to give testimony about the abuse give by the step monster.

Scottsgirl - They have two half-siblings from their mother's first marriage, a sister who may be from her marriage to Phil, and three step-sisters. When Phil and Mary divorced, Josh was around 8 and Jake was 5. Hard to believe Phil could get custody based on his background of wild behavior, drinking and drug use. Their mother was discussed a lot in the book. She was very pretty and exotic looking. She had no contact with them for 16 years, so I would guess they both were pretty young the last time they saw her until they were adults, especially Jake. Their story between Phil, Mary and their step-mother could be another book.

Phil had money - and maybe Mary didn't. The decision might have been based on who could support the boys - not on who was the most fit parent.

Bentwillow is right. Mary may not have had the money for an attorney. What confuses me is how he was given custody in spite of his time at sea, in addition to his wild ways.

Phil's Obituary, at www.legacy.com/obituaries/heraldnet/obituary.aspx?pid=139847683lists only three children: Jake, Josh and a sister, Andrea, as "blood relatives".. The boys may have insisted they preferred to be with Phil, and if he could prove that they would be cared for while he was away and that he could provide adequate financial support, their wishes might well have been taken into consideration once all the "character" assessments were sorted through.. Clearly there were serious "issues" in both of Phil's marriages. To paraphrase Leo Tolstoy, 'Happy families are all alike; every dysfunctional family is dysfunctionaly in its own way.'

The two half-siblings are discussed in the book on Phil. Andrea is one of the three step-sisters. I remember seeing obits that listed the three step-sisters when Phil passed. Years ago, Josh gave an interview where he stated he had five sisters and two brothers including Jake. According to the book, Phil had a baby(girl) with a girl while he was in high school and the book stated he had no contact with her. I saw a picture of a very young Jake(about maybe 7), Josh(looked to be about 10) and his step-sister Michelle with Phil and Teresa on one of the Capt. Phil Harris sites when it was public earlier this year. It is now private and you have to send a request to join. I can't imagine a Court letting a 5 and 8 year old decide who they want to live. Especially a step-mother they may have barely known.

Thanks for sorting that out, crabber! Maybe Phil simply hired a better Lawyer?

It sounds as though there was plenty of dysfunction to go around. I'm sure the judge took money into consideration.

Courts at the time of Phil's divorce from Mary almost always favored the mother for sole custody, with a father who had a work schedule like Phil's getting visitation. Nothing to do with money, Phil would have simply been ordered to pay more child support if Mary had less. Also, no 8 and 5 year old would have been allowed to decide who they wanted to live with. No, something very serious was up with Mary. She didn't just get tricked by the stepmother a few times and just give up on seeing her children. Obviously both kids have gone out of their way to redirect and not fill in the blanks publicly. Mary at least deserves some privacy, she is not on DC and every part of her life should not have to be an open book.

Maribegood, you might be right. I wonder if Mary might have been doing drugs along with Phil - and maybe had a bigger problem than Phil's?

Mari - I agree -there is obviously much more to the story than we know. At least Josh and Jake have chosen to keep whatever they know private. Just a sad situation all around for both boys and their family.

I checked the DC FB page last night and from the "hints" they have on the page it looks like Jake will be on the CM. Of course the comments range from happy he is clean to scum bag of the world who killed Phil. He can't win no matter what he does.

crabber, I preferred Jake over Josh anyway. Always have. Jake did not kill Phil, he had nothing to do with it. I have always wondered if Josh Jake blamed himself for Phil's stroke and he went into a deeper downward spiral. I felt Jake came to the CM to fish and be with his dad and not really because the camera was there.

Disco showed an old picture of J & J with the caption "What Are You Doing With Your Brother This Weekend". Some people seemed to somehow know he will be on the show. It looks it to me anyway. Someone posted a few weeks ago he would be on the last two shows. Svtubamom - I would not be surprised if Jake does blame himself. Also, unlike Josh, he never got to say his last goodby to Phi. He left thinking Phil would be going to rehab and he would see him then. I also agree, Jake was on the CM before the cameras, Josh came on the boat after the cameras and admitted numerous time he was there to be with his father and brother and because of the cameras. Only much later after Phil's death did he start with the annoying "Born, Bred, to be a fisherman" crap.

If, in fact, Jake returned to the CM and was filmed, he was making a yooooooge mistake. recovering addicts with less than a year of sobriety are strongly cautioned to not put themselves out in the public eye, if at all possible. Trust me, this is reeeeeeeeeally good advice. The pressures of nascent recovery are bad enough. Adding to it the outrageously intense lights of a show like DC? ? Big trubble. Monstrous, even. I want the lad to live a happy, joyous, and free life. DC, at this time, will most assuredly greatly jeopardize his chances.

I agree - I think Jake probably felt pressured big time from Josh and the DC fans to be on the show and filmed. Josh has made it well known he expects Jake to be part of the show and filmed. I think Jake would personally be happy to be left alone and not be pressured by Josh to do something he may not want to do.

Josh acts like a spoiled kid and is a huge embarrassment to his father. He sits on his ass, smoking while everyone is running the boat. So sad, ’cause I thought he would step forward and take over. He doesn’t deserve his father’s boat. Very sad indeed

Josh has always acted that way. Josh just wants to be a TeeVee superstar. Phil even stated that the cameras were the only reason why Josh came onboard. Josh knows nothing, acts like he knows everything, which makes him dangerous. Good thing that Casey is on board because Josh is so clueless about running the CM. Truthfully, I believe that if Casey or another Captain wasn't on the CM, Josh would never be able to get her away from the dock on his own.

I've heard that Phil was a big phycopath, he could be very angry with Mary and Theresa, he was both unfaithful, hit them and was always affected by drugs and alcohol. He was a true champion in manipulation and knew how to appear in front of a camara. All of this I was told by a friend to the family, I was very sad when I thought about Phil.

Truly sad. No wonder the boys turned out the way they did. It looks like Josh actually beat the odds. Poor Jake is following in his father's footsteps. Phil was flawed for sure - but he was also accomplished. May he rest in peace.

I only met Phil twice, and did not get a very good impression of him. His reputation among those that worked around him is not that of the great man that he is portrayed on DC.
