There was a seven point earthquake off Kodiak last night, wonder if the fleet felt it. I was getting tsunami warning text messages last night on my phone, wondered what was going on. I live on a hill so I wasn't worried.

I wondered the same thing and if the potential tsunami could have affected them.

They might have felt the earthquake or been affected by a potential tsunami if they were at the dock. If they were at sea there is almost no chance that they would have noticed either. The ships are already moving around so much on the water that what little bit of earthquake energy is transmitted through water would almost certainly have passed unnoticed. As for a tsunami. If they were in deep water they would likely never have noticed anything. In deep water a tsunami wave is only another wave. It would, at most, be a meter or two high and moving very quickly. It's only when the wave enters shallow water as the faster moving water at the back of the wave catches up with the water at the front of the wave that has been slowed down due to friction from the interaction with the sea floor that the wave builds to such remarkable heights. This is why you often hear of ships in tsunami warning areas heading for deep water when a warning comes in (if they have time...you do not want to be on a ship that is trying to reach deep water but doesn't quite make it.)

My boss just returned from King Cove and told me about the night of the earthquake. They got the notification of the tsunami warning in the middle of the night and had to evacuate all 400+ employees to higher ground. There was a crab boat at the dock at the time, and he was told to leave the dock and head for deep water. They would not even notice a tsunami if they were off shore.
It had been quite some time since there was a tsunami evacuation, but it was accomplished in less than a half hour. Only three people slept through it! There was no tsunami.

Wow! Now we know how an earthquake affects things! Mass evacuation for tsunami warning!
