I'm at home now, and catching up on Season 14 via On Demand.
I am on episode four and there are so many little things driving me nuts.
There is so much editing going on,I can't take much more.
Watch these guys when they are communicating. There are four or five communications systems available to these guys.
SSB(single side band) radio. Long range radio communication. Anyone withing a couple hundred miles can hear. Not much in use any more except in emergencies. When you hear the Coast Guard broadcasting, that is usually on SSB. There was a shot of a radio on the Cornelia Mari with the numbers "4125.00" That was a SSB broadcasting at 4125 mhz.
VHF radio. boat to boat communication.short range. line of sight within a few miles.Anyone within range can hear. In perfect conditions a VHF signal could go 30-40 miles, but not dependably.
I carry a hand held VHF at work for plant communication as well and talking to boats at the dock. The Coast Guard helicopters will talk to the boats on designated emergency channel 16. There are close to a hundred channels available in VHF range.
"Tag" phone.Satellite based.two way, completely private. operator holds the button until they hear a tone, then call the other party. You can hear this two tone sound when someone is initiating a call.Responding party can answer after called.
Satellite phone. works like a cell phone,a little more expensive to use,but prices have come down recently. Most boats using them now.Completely private
Cell phones.Only can be used within cell tower range. Not in the middle of the Bering Sea.
A few have various satellite based email systems.
What is getting me is watching DC portray these guys communicating. Recently watching Jake use a phone with a cord attached, probably a tag phone, talking to Keith holding a cell phone. Those devices will not talk to each other.
Or watching Brenna A talking to Cornelia Marie. Brenna A worrying about everyone in the fleet hearing them talk when it appeared they were talking on tag phones.
The other thing bugging me is watching continuity .
They are piecing together shots, trying to make us believe it's all the same string
One shot will show pots on deck, and the next shot will show no pots on deck.Or they will show a shot of flat calm seas, and the next shot waves crashing. One shot in he dark, the next shot in daylight.
I literally laughed out loud when Keith gave Jake a code sheet. We used those when the main communication was SSB, but with the advent of satellite communication they are a thing of the past.
I know, petty stuff, but is annoying me to the point that I don't know how much longer I can watch
