One of the missing crew members was the son of the man that was a foreman when I started working in King Cove. Art Ganacias was just a young kid when I started in King Cove 1986. I watched him grow up and become a fisherman. He loved being a crabber, and had been on the Scandies Rose for 2-3 seasons after being on the Bering Hunter that was sold. He is preceded in death by his brother, Tony Ganacias Jr, who was murdered in Sand Point Alaska quite a long time ago. Scandies Rose had a reputation of being a pretty good boat and had been around for a long time. RIP Art.

Art was a good friend. We fished together on the Rebel. I crossed many bars on the Rebel and New Venture with Gary. I'll see them on Fiddler's Green.

My heart, thoughts and prayers goes out to the family and friends, and the fishing community over the loss of those who were on the Scandies Rose.
This, has no doubt, sent shock waves through out the fishing community.
My condolences to one and all.

This is just another reminder of how fishermen put their lives on the line so that we can enjoy foods that are not readily available to us. May all crab and fishermen be blessed for their sacrifice and may we recognized how much is laid on the line for our love of sea food. My heart goes out to those who are friends and family of this lost crew.

This is just awful. It appears this was west of Kodiak, and (I think) not on the 'crab grounds'...perhaps traveling from Kodiak to Dutch Harbor to begin their season?. Does anyone know if the boat would have been carrying a full load of pots and bait?...or would it have been traveling light without all that gear? Also, I assume by the location, this area probably wasn't terribly icy?, and also wouldn't typically get the worst of the Bering sea storms? I guess I'm just wondering if they were traveling along under what would normally be considered relatively safe conditions, and something completely unexpected went horribly wrong.

Maybe they took on water or something wasn't tied down enough and shifted to make them list, as the survivors said the boat was listing badly. There were heavy 20 foot seas the night.

I just realized that one of the survivors, the one who posted a youtube video (since taken down) was Dean Gribble...he spent some time on the Saga and was on the show a few seasons ago.
