It is possible that it is salmon that was caught in Alaska, shipped to China for reprocessing, and shipped back to the US. One of the major processors in Alaska does this with almost all of their fish. alaskan pollock and cod as well as salmon are frozen whole(guts, gills, and blood) then shipped to china, thawed, processed, froze again, and shipped backed to the u.s. russia sells pink salmon, pollock, and cod to china whole to be processed. most of the time heads, guts and gills are removed before freezing, but it is true that a lot of pollock and cod as well as salmon is frozen and sent to China

The fish is frozen twice? Doesn't that affect the quality and taste? IF it is frozen, thawed, and refrozen properly, it doesn't affect quality too much. Most people wouldn't know the difference. The fish has to be initially flash frozen, then thawed in a controlled environment, then flash frozen again.

I've no problem with buying and eating "frozen" fish. In fact I prefer it to something labelled "Fresh" that's been languishing in a refrigerated display case that's being opened and closed all day long!

I prefer tho buy 'Frozen at sea'. That is good if the fisherman know what he's doing. 'Fresh' requires the fisherman, the processor, the truck driver and the shop to do the right thing all the time.

When I was a little girl growing up in Miami, Daddy would drive Mom and I down to the docks to wait for the fishing boats to come in. They would arrive and tell us what they had caught that day. It could be pompano, grouper, or red snapper. The fishermen would fillet it for us right there. Now that was fresh fish. And it has spoiled me for life. Now I live in the desert and have to buy frozen fish, and it always has an off taste, like something was added to it to keep it fresh, especially shrimp. So I just go to Red Lobster and have the salmon or crab legs.

So I just go to Red Lobster and have the salmon or crab legs. If a fish is frozen properly, it won't have an off taste. It will take on an off taste if held in the freezer too long and begins to dehydrate I would bet that most people could not tell the difference between properly frozen and fresh in a blind taste test. I can't speak for shrimp, but can tell you that most places do not add anything to preserve it except to "glaze" any fish that is not vacuum packed. Glazing is dipping frozen fish briefly in a fresh water bath to create a thin coat of ice on it to keep the air off. The fish has to be at least 10* or colder to get a good glaze Still, glazed fish begin to dehydrate quickly. Vacuum packed fish can be good for a couple years if held below 0*F and the vacuum seal doesn't break. I'm pretty sure that the salmon and crab you get at Red Lobster has been frozen.

Even "Name" Seafood Restaurants won't hesitate to serve up previously frozen fish. They've also been known to sell (battered) Pollock as "Cod" -- and some have even offered "Scallops" that were actually punched-out discs of shark meat. And as to the "Pedigree" of the Shrimp and Crab it's probably best not to ask. The "Bottom Line" ALWAYS Rules!

Thanks for the info, King Cove and darianagle. I guess I will just have to enjoy my seafood and not think about where it came from. I do not buy shrimp anymore, fresh or frozen, because it always tastes funny.

Today I traveled from King Cove to Sand Point,AK. I will be here a couple days. From my desk I can see the Wizard anchored up in the bay I'm assuming they are tendering Gulf of Alaska Pollock for Trident seafoods. Trident has a plant here in Sand Point and they are also exporting fish to their Akutan,AK plant.

Reviving an old thread..
Kodiak has been here in King Cove for a few days. Murray running it for tendering I can see the Time Bandit on AIS about three hours out. I don't know if they will stop in to King Cove. Saga is just leaving Seattle due to some extended time in the shipyard. Jake is not running it for tendering.

Thank You KC - I love Murray and did not know he was still fishing. Miss his calm, easy personality on DC. Murray is a really hard working guy. He fishes all the crab on the boat, fishes cod and tenders the entire season as well. This year he has his college student daughter working with him for tendering. I believe it was 2015 that he started king crab in November, fished cod in December and into January 2016,fished opies, fished more cod, then started tendering in June, all with just a few short breaks. I think he got a little time off between tendering and king crab that year.

Kodiak still tendering locally delivering here every day. Murray is a really easy guy to work with. Rollo passed through briefly loading some gear, and heading for Bristol Bay. Ramblin Rose is in town, getting ready for tendering A couple of the Saga crew members arrived in town, but Saga still enroute from Seattle due to a delay in the shipyard.

Interesting. Yesterday Jake Anderson have a video on facebook, where his wife was about to give birth. May be why he's not on the Saga right now.

Update: Saga showed up this morning sporting a brand new paint job, looking all shiny and new. It's about the same color blue, but the yellow trim has been painted red, and the boat name is a new font, and is white. I've gotta wonder about the guy running it, as it took the guy at least 6 times to get tied up to the dock, and the weather today is flat calm and sunny

It needed a new paint job too.

No,Jake is not on the Saga. Someone named Kyle who apparently ran the Ramblin Rose for cod tendering in the winter is on there. I did see Ole on the dock this morning.

Cornelia Marie is at the dock. Got to shake hands with Casey, but he's pretty busy getting ready for tendering, so didn't get to chat much.. They also were a little late getting out of the yard.

Was Josh H. on the Cornelia Marie? I saw him in one of the photos from Mandy Hansen's wedding, which was 5 days ago...so if the CM left a shipyard in Seattle and just arrived in King Cove, I don't think Josh was on it for that trip. Maybe he'll fly up there...but I've got a hunch that the profit margins for tendering wouldn't easily support co-captains.

Was Josh H. on the Cornelia Marie? No, and I didn't get to talk to Casey long enough to get any scoop.

Rollo has been salmon tendering here for the past few days. Also went to Dutch Harbor and brought us a load of herring to freeze for crab bait. This crew may be one of the worst salmon tendering crews that I have ever seen!

LoL, if memory serves me correctly, the Rollo in the past has not be the greatest at anything.

Cornelia Maria is back from Bristol Bay tendering and is busy here already. Unlike the Rollo, Casey and crew are a top notch tender crew.

I left King Cove on 8/31. I flew out on the same plane to Cold Bay with Murray Gamrath, formerly of Cornelia Marie and currently running the Kodiak. We sat in Cold Bay and chatted for close to three hours waiting for the plane to Anchorage. He was going home to Arizona for a month, then coming back to get ready for King Crab.
