i think it would be funny to have someone with a lot of mma/boxing experience go on the wizard and just blow his top and start whooping everyone's asses and throwing them overboard, now that would be worth watching.
but i would had suckerpunched that ugly short little freddy jackass too, think all that cable TV coverage has made his head balloon up.

EVERYONE ON THE WIZARD REALLY MADE THEMSELVES LOOK LIKE MENTAL MIDGETTS IN THE MOST RECENT EPISODE OF DEADLIEST CATCH. THE AVG IQ OF EVERY MEMBER OF THAT BOAT INCLUDING THE SPINELESS CAPTAIN MAY BARELY REACH 80. AT LEAST THEY SPEND THE MAJORITY OF THE YEAR WITH THEIR NOSES IN BAIT BENS AND OUT TO SEA SO THAT THE REST OF THE WORLD DOESNT HAVE TO INTERACT WITH THEM. ABSOLUTELY DISGRACEFUL.

what your hair happens to look like while fishing the is least important thing ever. How long your toenails are is a more concerning topic if you ask me.

I still say for all those crushing Freddie, you all really do not get it. It was harsh, but you all really do not know what sort of selfish move that was on the part of Tebo. Sorry, but refusing to be a part of the team and showing that solidarity is that crucial. You do not like it, and he does not seem like that bad of a person, but he should have had his hair cut.
It is not a big thing for him to get one, but it is a big thing to NOT get one. It is that simple. Like I said, anyone equating this to drug use, or nazis, or anything that is waaaay over the top do not get what it means to be part of a team like that.
Yes, actual lives are on the line. It is not "war" but there is a need for solidarity. That is why our armed forces get their hair cut in the way they do. That is why certain teams have "rites of passages" rituals in football or other team sports. Most things you will never know about. Ever.
Yes, it is the creepy man world and many of you criticize it, and while you do, you reveal that you do not get it. Hazing, is about building team work. When it is a bunch of men together in work like that, it goes back to something primal. I cannot explain it and you would really need to be a man to grasp what I am saying.
The most unfortunate part or maybe fortunate part of this situation is you got to see how things are, and many of those little parts of our lives that many of us do not want revealed to the world.
I also find it IRONIC how another man named TEBOW went along with it, and showed he was willing to be a part of the team. Remember when Tebow allowed himself to get that ridiculous hair cut? Did it kill him? Did it wound him? No, it didn't.
If you all understood the level of selfishness that was on the part of Dane, then you would have a better understanding. Then he did sucker punch him on top of that.
Did I feel a bit a sorry for Dane? Yeah. Did I think it went over the top? Yeah. However, that is how a snowball starts. It starts small and gorws and grows and grows. The team unity was shattered on that boat and as the bad fishing kept on happening, the more it grows.
If Dane from the beginning showed team unity and did the haircut, everything would be OK. You think it is as bad for the Northwestern to get people to bite the head off of a cod? Yeah? No? To me that is worse. You do not know if that thing is infected with bacteria or worms. Jake Anderson did it. They all did it. None of them refused to do it.
Like I said, there are times and places where the "hazing" is necessary. If you do not get it, then you do not get it. You will not convince me Dane was not being selfish though. That is for sure.

What a great big load of horsesh*t that post was. Hazing is not about building team work, it is about forcing conformity and bullying the weak.
You probably will not get this, blueknight, since you're obviously a fool, but hazing does not build anything. It only hurts both the people doing it and the people having it done to them. If it's such a great team building tool, then why can't the Wizard seem to hang on to any greenhorns?

alos, the northwestern had jake a as a greehorn back when and now they have sunshine. do you see them doing stuff to him like keith and the wizard was doing to dane? no. of course they tease him, but the NW guys are class act unlike the wizard loosers.

Did Soper, Lenny or Mouse get haircuts? If not, then I guess they weren't team members. Team building takes place all the time in many areas of life with very effective results with both sexes. Hazing is another thing altogether. A group working together to perform multiple tasks at once to achieve a common goal, now that's a team.

Greenhorns are ridiculed whether they get asked to get a haircut or not. Perhaps the show puts everyone on their best behavior, or DC edits it out, but it's naive to believe that a crab boat operates like a white-collar office environment in respect to new-hires.
Personally I thought *Freddy* showed good restraint in not killing the guy after he took a swing at him.

"Freddie" and "Keith" just wanted to feel superior so the path to least resistance is to pick on the new guy. Getting haircuts and actually believing it will improve fishing results, "Keith" and "Freddie" just proved to the world their lack of intellect. Actually watching DC over the years, it's obvious most of these guys aren't the sharpest knives around.

Somewhere on another thread, I think, somebody brought up Jake Anderson, and now Sunshine, on the NW. Teasing. Yes. Give him a hard time. Yes. Bullying? Not needed, so eating the head of a herring seemed to be in good fun. The Wizard could learn something.

I'd rather have an octopus thrown at me while I'm wearing raingear and already covered in fish/crab guts, than bite the head off of a chunk of bait.
I also wouldn't ever contemplate telling a superstitious fisherman that they're belief system is stupid.

Well, I see there are very disrespectful people on here, personally attacking me. Funny how it is really. The very ones against personal attacks, personally attack.
Hilarious really.
Yes, many boat captains are very superstitious. It is not a big surprise considering how close to death they all are. One rogue wave, and they are dead. The over all working conditions. It is NOT for the faint of heart. Those rites of passage among men and jobs like this is more than some superstition.
Again, most of you do not get it, and it is beyond clear that those who are so offended by such things have never come close to being in a similar situation. It is entirely one thing to watch the show from your air conditioned, comfortable couch or bed. It is entirely something else to be in it.
Again, I felt Keith and Freddy did go over the top. Like I mentioned, it snow balled into something it should not have. You have no idea what little things can set off people and there are subtle and sometimes overt signs of disrespect.
I can tell you, all of the ones you do resepct, Sig, Edgar, Jake, Johnathan, all of them would have had their hair cut if they saw the whole crew was trying to unify. Sometimes changing an attitude or solidifying bonds is VERY NECESSARY. Now do I think those things make crabs go into their pots? No, and neither do they. Some of them try to get into a fresh state of mind. They rely on the law of averages at the end of the day and they know odds are they will eventually fill the boat.
Again, that is not the point. You want to attack me for telling you how it is? Fine you feel free to attack me. I will say this too. None of the captains or crews are taking the side of the greenhorn.
I will reiterate, they both went over the top. It should have never got to that point, and anyone refusing to get his little hairs cut to show unity, is utter disrespect. That is the reason why it got to a place it should have never gotten to.

A little reminder for anyone defending Keith... he has proven to be a rat before Yeah, I loved that. I cannot stand his insecure power trips, and he deserved to go ankles over ass. His brother should punch him in the face one time too. Just for a reckoning. At the end of the day, I really do not like Keith. However, that does not mean Dane should not have gotten his hair cut. Period. Don't see Sig or anyone else verbally defending Keith do you ?No, but that situation is not this situation. Is it common on these boards to bring irrelevant fallacies to project a point. I did see Sig say it was wrong for the greenhorn to reject getting his hair cut. Yeah I did see that.

Very nice but the facebook page and DSC site ( fan feedback) are not supporting Keith or the Wizard on this. Both you and anyone else can not like it but the fact remains the majority of fans disagree.

Have a great 4th Yeah, I know most of the fans do not get it. Then again most of them have never been in a type of job like that. That is true too. Every single one of those boats have superstitious things and 99.9999999% if all the greenhorns go through hazing. Including sunshine, including every one of them. I do expect 99% of the "Face Book" crowd to not get it. That, is something you certainly did not need to tell me.

Freddie started this tradition on the Cornelia Marie. If my memory serves, it was only him and Josh Harris who got the mohawks when Phil's trip was going south. While I remember Phil being appreciative of Freddie and Josh getting the mohawks to "turn the trip around", no one else on the CM did. Not Jake H., not the engineering, not the other guy working the deck.
Freddie did not try and coerce anyone else on the CM to get the mohawk, he just got a volunteer. Why didn't he try and get the guy working the deck who was not Phil's son fired? He didn't go after Jake to get a mohawk. Apparently, it is a life and death bonding excercise on the Wizard to get a mohawk (Soper, Lenny and Monty didn't), but it was just a way to lift the captain's spirits on the CM. That tells me it had nothing at all to do with the superstitions of sailors, and everything to do with exerting power on the least senior member.

Maribegood, thanks for reminding us of the history of the mohawk on the CM. You are absolutely right...on the CM it was all in good fun. How did it morph into something so destructive? It was too bad as Dane wanted to learn crab fishing and it appeared that he had been doing his job, as he was missed after he walked off deck.

Has nothing to do with whether he was doing a good job. EVERY greenhorn goes through a rite of passage. ALL boat captains are superstitious. This is NOT UNIQUE. The NW is giving sunshine all kinds of crap, and the Kiska Sea is crushing Anderson, even though Anderson is not a greenhorn. There is no good reason, NONE, that Dane refused to allow his hair to be cut. As I said (AGAIN) they went way over the top. It should not have gotten to that point, at all. Not even close. If Dane allowed his little precious hairs to be cut, he would have endeared himself to the crew. Again, anyone not understanding how crucial THAT IS only shows how you have never been a part of ANYTHING like that. Many seem to shluff it off as though those things mean nothing. Again, it is the perspective of people that would never find themselves in the middle Bering sea, hundreds of miles from land. Enough time passes by, and the deaths you learn about, you too will tend to get superstitious. Count on it. However, this goes beyond mere superstition. It is more poignant than that. You all insist on this or that or the other. The snowball should have never started, and the "hazing" that Freddy did to Dane was really nothing in the beginning. The haircut was technically not hazing at all, considering even the captain was getting his hair cut. By definition that is not actually hazing. Since, they are all doing it. It is sign of solidarity. When the fishing is bad for these guys, their spirits start getting really low. Again, you would have to be out in the middle of Bering Sea to know what that is all about. Postive thinking is that CRUCIAL in such working conditions. You all from your air conditioned homes are showing no ability to consider the psychological strain it is, and all things, however small to build up spirits are that crucial. It would have been NOTHING for Dane to get a haircut. Nothing. However, it really turned into something when he didn't. He screwed up, and then it turned into something where you as a viewer hate Freddy.

I could care what the folks on facebook saw about this issue. I agree with Bluenight. We landlubbers have no idea what rituals routinely take place on fishing boats. The program isn't called 'Deadliest Catch' for nothing. Only the toughest make it on the high seas so the behavior of these fisherman is going to differ from the general population. It would seem necessary that the strength and resolve of each man has to be tested by the crew in order to determine whether they are going to work as a team or cave. Dane failed. I don't agree with the tactics, but I do understand the intent. It seems that the armed forces also employ such testing - but no one seems to object about that.
