Yes, it is clear to me that there are individuals on here that simply cannot accept true caveman world. I made a mention on how this world has become very matriarchal. That is not to offend or insult, but to state facts.
I would prefer (there is a reason) that many of these creepy man rituals would be kept secretive and not exposed to the naive and people with delicate sensibilities. It is virtually impossible to convince such people of really anything.
This is the double edged sword of being exposed to the realities of how men can be. It is not just about "bullying." I love the simplistic labels given by those who watch such shows as they eat potato chips from a nice comfortable couch.
Have no clue what it is to be out there in such conditions while you look in 360 degrees all around you, and no land for hundreds of miles. While you get sea sick and you know the risk is real. Unifying methods brought on by hazing is not necessarily about building up, but testing resolve. The fact that some of you have no capability of even considering what that is all about and how necessary that is, is what it sad to me.
Many of you, perhaps, would and should limit your viewing to OWN and Lifetime. Watch Shakespeare In Love over and over and again. Sip your wine, and do not consider creepy caveman world. Everything will be fine.

Uh-huh. You do not mean to insult, but those with "delicate sensibilities" should watch chick flicks and not look at the big, bad world of manly men. Society has become "matriarchal".
Believe it or not, "matriarchs" are just as capable of creepy rituals and hazing/bullying/testing resolve to ensure group conformity. Do men honestly think they do something special there, or that you need a Y chromosome to do it or understand it?
Thank you for trying to protect my delicate sensibilities, but I have been watching this show for nine years, and I don't see that changing. I can even do it without reaching for my smelling salts. There also seems to be several holders of Y chromosomes on this board who are not entirely comfortable with what went down regarding the Wizard greenhorn. Are we to believe that is because they are acting like women? I don't think so. People, not matriarch and patriarchs, watch the show and come to differing opinions. It's human nature, not a signal of the girlification of society.

It's pretty clear that BN has never actually spent any time at all around females, as all his information apparently comes from TV and Gothic romance novels. Poor thing.

This is a fascinating thread. There are several – mostly women? – who feel there was no bullying aboard the Wizard, and that the crew’s behavior regarding GH Dane was perfectly acceptable. Several others – mostly men? – believe it was bullying and wrong. I would have bet the farm, this would have been the other way around. Workplace BullyingIt was bullying. Anyone who thinks it wasn’t is delusional. And it was condoned by Captain Keith, who sees and hears all, down on the deck below. He permitted Freddy to commit acts that could be considered assault in the real world. He committed assault himself, when he physically shoved Dane into a wall. He assaulted a cameraman in a previous episode. But the microcosm of the Wizard is not the real world. At sea, Keith is a dictator with near unlimited power and anything short of murder will be dealt with by him. Is this right or wrong? Is it necessary? Just because it’s always been this way, is it okay? I don’t know, but if feels wrong to me, and unnecessary. A good manager would have encouraged his crew to work with this underperforming GH until they could get back to port and replace him. But of course, that would not be so entertaining for the cameras. Watching pots being pulled up and in over the gunwale is pretty dang boring now -- a constant supply of drama is required, to make this program work.

I'm a gray-haired granny, but hurt someone I love or a defenseless animal, and the world sees my other side -- kinda like the Wolverine -- the fangs come out. I'm a delicate flower -- with thorns. Great thing about getting old -- I've gotten bolder. Don't need to impress anybody anymore.

Freddy and the captain need to go down with ship ! Yes I am a team player ask me to eat fish guts or seagull shit but ask me to cut my hair and your freaking going overboard my friend :DDid anyone bother to tell the newbie before he boarded what stupid rituals the boat had Just a question.

I don't know if I would have cut my hair or not in that situation... I understand the team concept, the fun of it, the superstitions, etc. I shave my head bald every summer because I want to, but to be told to cut it to keep my job might be a bit overboard. If I told someone where I work they had to cut their hair to keep their job, or actually threw something at them (and by the way, Freddie lined that octopus up like a baseball pitcher, not a casual lob), I would be walked out the door regardless of my seniority or standing with the boss or who I threw it at, or no matter what their attitude or personal feelings are (Fraternity or whatever). I don't what labor laws, if any, an employee has out the Bering Sea on a crab boat, but the video is clear, Dane was threatened and assaulted, and Keith did not take any action to prevent it, he actually encouraged it. Dane will probably have to pay for his actions as well, but the argument can be made he was in a threatened position to act the way he did.
I hate lawyers as much as the average person in the world does, but I wouldn't have any problems if I heard that labor lawyers were trying to contact Dane after seeing this series of episodes, or Dane courting a labor lawyer and going after Freddie and Keith if he so chose to do so. No one should have to through that in order to make a living.
Judge Dane by how he did his job, not by his decision not to cut his hair. If he sucked at baiting pots, fine, fire him.
Lost all respect for Keith... going to burn the autographed case of Henry Weinhard's and dump the beer in the autographed bottles I got from him last fall. Embarrassed that I waited in line at a Walmart to get those and pictures of him holding my son.

Traditions are all well and good. But he didnt want to participate in the hair cut thing.. He didnt disrespect anyone. He should have been judged on his work ethic.
Keith is one of the worst leaders I have ever seen. He continually loses greenhorns due to his crews abuse. Then they have to work a man short. Not alot of brains on that boat.
Of course I think some of these scenarios are set up for TV. So this could all be played for the camera.

Just from watching the kid it seemed like he had a "holier then thou" attitude. Its also amazing to look at some of you that think you are all experts on how life works on a commercial fishing boat, because you watched a couple of episodes of Deadliest Catch. When someone higher then you says "Jump", you respond with "How High?"
Keep your insults against your fellow posters to yourself ACK. -Maribegood

It was Dane's decision not to get a haircut and I respect him for that - rather than be intimidated by the boat bully. Of course he sucker punched him (although it wasn't shown) how else do you bring bullies down when all they've got is muscle, especially between the ears. Oh and I have seen more ripples across the top of my tot glass than the majority of people have seen waves so I know what I'm talking about. Bering Sea - a duck pond full of 5 day wonders. Don't forget they may have called Dane Tebo a Greenhorn on the Wizard but he had got three years on a cod boat under his belt and knew what he was talking about. Unlike Keith he wasn't frightened by that Samoan's size - A real survivor = well done Dane - pleasure to have come into contact with a real man.

A real man doesn't try to sucker punch someone with their back turned towards them, nor would he QUIT in the face of adversity.
I have to wonder about people that consider what Dane did as admirable.

I have always thought that the sucker punch and the 'talk to the camera' before it, was done so Dane could have his 15 minutes of fame. Nobody in their right mind would go after Freddy like that.

Apparently you've never actually seen or worked on the Bering Sea. Three years of cod is NOT the same as three years of crab.

Cod boats in the Bering (or anywhere for that matter) are typically football-field sized, in both width and length. The rail is typically 10-20ft tall where the deckands are working, and the crews on those decks typically work 6on-6off shifts (12hr days). Its a cruise ship compared to the typical Crabber Boat, complete with a full galley of professionally trained chefs, hot tubs, and sauna's.
When your boat is 300ft long, a 50ft wave is insignificant. When you're 100ft long, that wave is your doom if you don't take it right. Aside from being on the ocean, and calling yourself a fisherman, the difference between a crabber and a "Codder" is night and day.
