Dane had it easy. He chose his own path, and found out he wasn't ready for crabbin.
no harm, no foul, but the guy crumbled... not a crabber. happens a lot.

I seem to remember some greenhorn action besides poor, sensitive, delicate Dane - didn't Jake A, among other things, get duct taped to a post on the Northwestern as a GH? And didn't Josh H or someone get hung from the crane and dipped in the sea? I recall flour bombs on the Time Bandit, prison stripes painted on rain gear, the GH having to bite the head off a herring, etc. etc. Cutting some hair or getting an octopus tossed at you doesn't seem so bad. As Lenny said in an interview on The Bait, something about Dane rubbed the entire crew wrong - none of them liked him almost right from the start. As in nature, the herd can sense when one doesn't fit in and usually cuts them loose. Good that he's gone.

Josh H. got duct taped to a post on the Time Bandit, and Jake A. got dipped in the Bering Sea with the crane from the Northwestern. The difference in both those cases compared to Dane's, is that Josh H. and Jake A. were both well established in their respective groups and in on the "fun" of those incidents. They were not being used as some type of culling device. I think there is a difference between getting an octopus tossed at you to be silly and getting an octopus tossed at you to provoke you.
I don't expect Lenny or anyone else on the Wizard to say anything different. Keith is their employer. Are they really going to go on the record and say "Yeah, this wasn't our finest hour."?
Keith's boat makes very good money for its deckhands, and yet last year they brought a guy on board who had never seen the ocean, they had a lazy con who they treated better, another lazy whiner, and this year...oh look!, another greenhorn who doesn't fit in. Except this one was actually doing the work expected of him. As the boz noted, there is a glut of experienced crab fishermen (supply) and not enough slots on boats to employ them all (demand). Which leaves us with either Keith consenting to having inexperienced crew so his boat can be used as a reliable drama llama by Discovery, or he has no clue how to pick people to fill his vacancies.

Excellent post Mari. My money is on the drama llama theory. I tend believe guys like Boz and Kingcove when it comes to the real reality of that world up there. I don't trust disco at all anymore. They are after all the same channel that gave us "Devils Ride". Ever take a look at those message boards? Oh my. Talk about some riled up (actual) bikers!

I totally agree that a lot of the drama is scripted by Discovery. I've not understood why they think that the crab fishing with the dangers etc. that are connected with it aren't enough for us. Don't need that crap.
I think that the difference between most incidents being 'fun' or being 'hazing' is mostly based on the reaction of the GH. What started out as a spirit building/bad-luck-breaking activity of hair cutting on the Wizard went into the crapper when Dane reacted with his condescending refusal to participate. When it happened on the CM with Josh, he went along with it along with Phil and Freddy and whoever else and it fell onto the 'fun' side. Both Josh and Jake A were on the receiving end of a lot of stuff in their GH years. An octopus tossed is an octopus tossed. It's not a weapon or harmful. If you think you're going to do a very hard job in a very competitive industry and earn big bucks, you'd better man up and quit whining. You're the bottom man on the totem pole and have to work your way up. It happens in a lot of jobs in every walk of life.
Junebuggyz - I'm with you on the kidney stone comment.... Discovery got exactly what they wanted with all the buzz and discussion about this. Blech.

Maribegood, thanks for reminding us of the history of the mohawk on the CM. You are absolutely right...on the CM it was all in good fun. How did it morph into something so destructive? It was too bad as Dane wanted to learn crab fishing and it appeared that he had been doing his job, as he was missed after he walked off deck. Has nothing to do with whether he was doing a good job. EVERY greenhorn goes through a rite of passage. ALL boat captains are superstitious. This is NOT UNIQUE. The NW is giving sunshine all kinds of crap, and the Kiska Sea is crushing Anderson, even though Anderson is not a greenhorn. There is no good reason, NONE, that Dane refused to allow his hair to be cut. As I said (AGAIN) they went way over the top. It should not have gotten to that point, at all. Not even close. If Dane allowed his little precious hairs to be cut, he would have endeared himself to the crew. Again, anyone not understanding how crucial THAT IS only shows how you have never been a part of ANYTHING like that. Many seem to shluff it off as though those things mean nothing. Again, it is the perspective of people that would never find themselves in the middle Bering sea, hundreds of miles from land. Enough time passes by, and the deaths you learn about, you too will tend to get superstitious. Count on it. However, this goes beyond mere superstition. It is more poignant than that. You all insist on this or that or the other. The snowball should have never started, and the "hazing" that Freddy did to Dane was really nothing in the beginning. The haircut was technically not hazing at all, considering even the captain was getting his hair cut. By definition that is not actually hazing. Since, they are all doing it. It is sign of solidarity. When the fishing is bad for these guys, their spirits start getting really low. Again, you would have to be out in the middle of Bering Sea to know what that is all about. Postive thinking is that CRUCIAL in such working conditions. You all from your air conditioned homes are showing no ability to consider the psychological strain it is, and all things, however small to build up spirits are that crucial. It would have been NOTHING for Dane to get a haircut. Nothing. However, it really turned into something when he didn't. He screwed up, and then it turned into something where you as a viewer hate Freddy.

The whole greenhorn thing is such a croc of xxxx. The guy turns up and gets on with his job, no complaints from anyone about that apart from freddy who basically called he guy names. Well some people don't take it from anyone and I say well done.!!!
Freddy is a fucxxxx bully and got no more than he deserved. If Dane was 6'5" and built like a slab would the big tough Fred have given him such a hard time? Would he have insisted on a hair cut then? I doubt it very much!
The guy is a bully and fair play to Dane for not only standing up to him but also having a go at him! Even after all said and done Dane showed complete composure and integrity and like he said "trying to catch me as the boat turned what a joke"
Freddy is a prick

I'd also like to state that a seasoned deckhand on a crab boat is the very last man on the planet you'd probably want to mess with, regardless of how "slabby" you might be. I can't tell ya how many jocks I've seen learn this lesson the hard way. I'm not condoning nor condemning how GH's are treated, I'm just stating what I know from my own experiences.

Oh brother, now its bullying bullying bullying... he's a bully blah blah blah, lets get the bully.... Enough with the social engineering to make the world a better place. The result is dumbing everything down to the lowest common denominator, to accomodate the individual at any cost.

Your point is irrelevant to the topic at hand, spare me your shallow assertions. Wwaaa waaaa waaa the new guy's feelings got hurt, have another drink of the latest social engineering fad mantra Kool-Aid.
You cannot see that the whole mohawk haircut thing is really a shrewd teambuilding exercise. It created solidarity amongst the crew, injected vigor, laughter and youth into demoralized men and created a reset and refocus on fishing. Importantly it also reinforces loyalty between captain and crew. Danes refusal to participate undermines the morale booster of the whole process and I empathize with Keith's frustration.

Actually, the "team building exercise" did none of those things. Not one. It didn't reset or refocus, and in fact not everyone participated anyway. Nor were they asked to. Nor was that the intent, at least if you listen to what was actually said and done on the show, rather than the shallow assertions you just made up. And the post you quoted has absolutely EVERYTHING to do with the topic at hand.

Every proven, hard won, traditional, established principle is callously disregarded by an individualistic, ingratiating, entitled, superficial and impotent society. No wonder everything has gone downhill, its mass stupidity liberalism reigning supreme.
